1996 Citroën AX 1.0i Debut 5-door. New MOT.
AXs are getting quite rare now and this is a nice example of the even harder to find 5-door version.
Being one of the last of the range, this gorgeous little car has the benefit of the single-point fuel injected TU9 engine so it’s even more economical than the conventional carburettor version, and has a bit more power too.
I’ve owned this car for 7 years and it has been fantastic. Having owned 2cvs & an Ami6 previously, I was pleasantly surprised that although it’s much more refined, quieter and quicker, there is still a feeling of the heritage of its predecessors to enjoy. It’s not just another little hatchback; it’s got character!
Like the previous owners (very good friends), I’ve looked after our AX, with regular servicing, brakes, exhaust, clutch, cambelt, tyres, etc, and it’s never let me down. When I changed my job and had to commute, I didn’t want to put too many miles on the AX, so I bought a boring commuter car and saved the AX for more pleasurable trips. I still like to attend 2cv gatherings, despite no longer having a 2cv, and a couple of years ago we had a great trip to the 2cv World Meeting in Switzerland, via Paris. (As usual it was ultra-reliable!)
Its 30th birthday will be next year and it’s still a very presentable car only being let down a few minor things: There’s some rust on the edge of the bonnet and a small dent on a rear door, the usual issue with Citroens of that time, with the lacquer on some panels and the cover-material on the driver’s seat is torn.
More recently we’ve been using the car less and, after having loved owning it for 7 years, we’ve made the sad decision to pass it on to a new owner. AX prices have started to rise over the last couple of years, now that they are coming into classic status (with the resulting cheap insurance), but we would really like it to go to a good home, to someone who will enjoy and cherish the car as we have, so we’re only asking £950.
It’s just had new mot and new brake hoses, plus the front brake pads & discs were replaced not that long ago. As can be seen in the photos, the car comes with lots of paperwork and a set of roof bars.
