The problem with the original: The mild steel parts that hold the mirror-head to the arm corrode. This either causes the plastic swivel half-ball to split, leaving the head loose on the arm, or the fixing pin corrodes through and the mirror-head just drops off. Also if you want to replace the arm, the fixing is usually seized and breaks when dismantling is attempted.
The cure: The easiest way to deal with this is to replace it with a MirrorCool swivel kit.
We have done away with the original flawed system. We use a special curved washer instead of the plastic half-ball and a set of precision-made springs to maintain the correct swivel tension. To prevent corrosion caused by water ingress we have used stainless steel (inox) fixings, a compressable nylon spacer sleeve under the head of the stainless steel screw and a rubber seal on the curved washer.
If you already have a MirrorCool silicone surround trim on your mirror, the glass and trim can be removed and re-fitted in order to fit a new swivel kit. However, if you still have the original hard plastic surround, you will need the MirrorCool silicone trim kit, (listed seperately: click on “Accessories” above this description).
This kit is designed for the Geco 22, 274, 275 and 438 mirrors that are fitted to 2CV, Dyane, and some other cars. It may be suitable for some other Geco and Cipa mirrors.
